Security of Your Computer

To protect your computer from different security threats, you need at least to take these measures:

  • Have a modern operating system with the latest updates which is updated by its manufacturer regularly.
  • Have a decent anti-virus software with the latest updates which is updated by its manufacturer regularly.
  • Never work at your computer as an administrator because in this mode viruses and other malware accidentally launched by you are also running with administrative privileges and can neutralize protective sub-systems of your operating system and of your anti-virus software. Instead, create a common (non-administrative) account and use it to work. Use an administrative account only to perform administrative tasks: to install software, to make system-wide settings etc.

Tip
You can create several common (non-administrative) accounts for different types of your activities: one for work, one for banking, one for playing games and browsing the Internet etc. This way you localize all the damage (should this ever happen) only to a compromised account; the other accounts will be safe.

  • Set strong passwords for all accounts (administrative and non-administrative). That is, passwords which contain little and capital letters, at least one digit, at least one special symbol like $%@, and contain no words, no dates, no car or other known to you numbers. The length of a strong password is 8 symbols and more.
  • Install only well-known software. If you doubt safety of some piece of software, there can be a so-called portable version which is not needed to be installed and can be launched from a common (non-administrative) account. Running software this way will minimize the potential risks. (This is why Typing Commander can be used in the portable way.) Some installers allow to install software even from a common (non-administrative) account. If that is the case, use that possibility to test the software for its safety.
  • Update installed software. Some computer programs (e.g. many modern web browsers) update themselves automatically.
